Black Lives Matter demands removal of all Confederate symbols
In a series of Twitter posts Monday, the Chicago Black Lives Matter group called for the removal of all Confederate flags, statues, and organizations, saying they should be illegal, just as Germany outlawed all Nazi symbols after World War II.
The BLM group tweeted, “The fact that the Confederate flag & statues permeate the south is evidence that white supremacy was never overthrown in the United States. After WWII, Germany outlawed the Nazis, their symbols, salutes & their flags. All confederate flags & statue, & groups should be illegal.”
“The KKK & all other white supremacist groups should be illegal for the same reason Germany made them illegal – for crimes against humanity. The murder of Heather Heyer reveals white supremacists value no life, even white life. We must end white supremacy in the United States,” The Chicago BLM group stated.
Black Lives Matter isn’t the only one calling for all Confederate symbols to be obliterated. The Islamic group, CAIR, also voiced the demand this week, calling for all city and state governments to immediately erase every symbol of Confederate history.
On Tuesday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights group that was listed by the U.S. government in 2009 as helping provide funding to the terror group Hamas, issued its own demands for all Confederate monuments and memorials in the United States to be torn down.
CAIR has capitalized on the movement to apply their own leverage in the situation, as Nihad Awad, CAIR’s national executive director, has put out a call for all city and state governments to immediately erase every symbol of Confederate history.
Awad released the following statement to the Daily Caller:
“A fitting response to the deadly terror attack on anti-racist protesters in Charlottesville would be for officials in states and cities nationwide to immediately announce that every street, every school, every flag, and every public memorial honoring those who took up arms in defense of white supremacy and slavery will be removed or have its name changed to instead honor those who fought for civil rights. Removal of these memorials would be a small step forward in turning the page on the darkest period in our nation’s history.”
The public responded to the Black Lives Matter Twitter posts with several important reminders, including the fact that Democrats were a part of slavery and founded the KKK, and that black soldiers fought for the Confederate Army.
Others reminded the Chicago BLM group that it should focus more on black crime in its own city, instead of a flag in the south, with one stating, “With the violence/gangs/crime going on in Chicago, blacks pose a much greater risk to each other than white supremacy ever has/could.”
Yet another Twitter user reminded the BLM that “620,000 white men died in the process of ending slavery” and are getting no thanks.
