After the videotaped beating of Rodney King first aired on TV certain groups called for Chief Gates resignation. As Chief Gates assistant I became a target too and in the process religious freedom suffered a severe blow.
The attack began with an article in the May 1991 issue of Los Angeles Magazine titled, “The Dan Quayle Principle Strikes Again!” There I read, “Liberals eager to give the Police Chief a heave ho may first want to check out who is in line to fill his standard issues.
The LAPD #2 man is a 38 year veteran Assistant Chief Robert L. Vernon and he holds some well controversial religious beliefs indeed! A long time member of the board of Directors of the 10,000 member Grace Community Church , Vernon stars in the “True Masculine Role” which is a 6 part audio series produced by the church.
He condemns homosexuality and depicts cops as ministers of God. He instructs church goers that the woman is submissive to the man and adjures men to recognize the concept of disciplining followers, whether it be your son, employees or anyone under control. Vernon also sites Biblical scholarship to tell parents if a child is rebellious you must break the rebellion.” unquoting article: The tapes rather than support the magazine’s report, refute it at every turn. For example, the statement of a rebel child was my use of a real life illustration where a misguided father had spoken those words in the tape.
I condemned the father for the attitude and practice. I did present the Biblical teachings for the purpose of using controlled chastisement as an act of love but that’s a far cry from child beating. I did say, as Scripture says, that wives must submit to their husbands but I also said that husbands must serve their wives as Christ serves the church, that is unto death.
