North Carolina Reins in Teachers

 by Steven Ahle

Two of the biggest scams run by teachers are now coming to an end in North Carolina, where Gov. Pat McCrory signed legislation that does away with tenure and automatic pay increases for teachers who get their masters degree. This is a victory for education in North Carolina.

Tenure is bestowed on teachers after they serve a certain period of time and makes the teacher practically untouchable. It becomes exceedingly impossible to fire them even for major infractions or even outright crimes. Teachers will now have to keep their nose clean and will actually have to produce results in the classroom.

Numerous studies have shown there is no correlation between an advanced degree and improved teaching in the classroom. Although many states have discussed ending tenure, North Carolina is the first to actually do it. It is a step in the right direction in holding teachers accountable for their classroom performance and is long overdue.

They are no obstacles to a quality education that are greater than teacher unions.
